Review: Majin Boo Saga (DBZ episodes 220 - 291)

Coming off of the massive Artificial Human and Cell storylines, Dragon Ball Z took a turn for more lighthearted fair for a time. With the Anoyo-ichi Budokai and Great Saiyaman Sagas, viewers were allowed to relax and enjoy the peaceful fruits of Gohan and Goku's victory against Cell. Majin Boo is the next, and last, epic storyline of the original Dragon Ball manga and the Dragon Ball Z TV anime. But after the darker tone of the Cell storyline, DBZ's tone switch to the lighthearted never completely goes away. Some people welcome the change and see it as a return to earlier storylines like the Red Ribbon Army. Others think it's just more proof that DBZ should have ended already. More on that, after the break.

While not technically a "movie", the Dream 9 Super Collaboration Special is a TV special featuring Toei Animations giants, Dragon Ball Z and One Piece, and the young (and eventually, canceled - in favor of more Dragon Ball Kai and now Dragon Ball Super) upstart, Toriko. It's a fun, if very poorly animated, two-episode-length special featuring the heroes from all three shows in an effort to cross promote Toriko's anime and Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods. (One Piece being included simply because One Piece prints money in Japan.) So with that out on the table, let's have a look at Toriko x One Piece x Dragon Ball Z!

In October of 1990, the Freeza Saga was in the middle of airing for the first time on Fuji TV. On October 17th, between Dragon Ball Z episodes 63 and 64, aired an hour long Dragon Ball Z TV Special... the first on its kind, entitled Dragon Ball Z: A Final Solitary Battle ~The Z Warrior Kakarotto's Father Challenges Freeza~. As the title suggests, the special focuses around Son Goku's biological father, Bardock, and his final, lonely battle against Freeza. Dragon Ball author Akira Toriyama didn't contribute story or characters to the special (other than those characters taken from the original manga, like Freeza, Dodora, Vegeta, etc), but he did redesign and rename Bardock's crew based on character designer Katsuyoshi Nakatsuru's original work.

Two years have passed since the climatic battle with Majin Boo. Son Goku, Vegeta, Mr. Boo, and Mr. Satan finally defeated the monster together, on the Planet of the Kaioshin. Yet the only one who was given any credit to the world at large for the victory was Earth's mighty champion, Mr. Satan. And much to the dismay of his daughter Videl, the glory of it has very much gone to his head.

At long last, the struggle is over. Majin Boo is dead. With the combined powers of Son Goku, Vegeta, Mr. Boo, Mr. Satan, the people of Earth, and three well-placed wishes to Porunga, Majin Boo was slain by a Super Genki Dama.

Although the Super Genki Dama is complete, Vegeta is too weak to move away from the blast zone. Goku grits his teeth in frustration, unwilling to let his friend die, especially so soon after his reprieve from death and Hell itself.
