Review: Baby Saga (DBGT episodes 23 - 40)

Toei's Dragon Ball anime staff finally landed on a story they wanted to tell once they introduced the Machine Mutant Baby. After trying their hand at making Dragon Ball GT a return to classic Dragon Ball, the Baby Saga takes a firm stance as a brand new Dragon Ball Z-inspired tale. You have the transforming baddie, the Earth-wide scope, a ton of characters are involved, and new training with a new form for our hero. But can Dragon Ball GT do DBZ better than it did DB?

Dragon Ball GT ep 40 - Earth Explodes!! Piccolo's Momentous Decision

Despite their best efforts to recover the Black Star Dragon Balls, the Earth has only two weeks left until the year is up and the planet explodes; All thanks to Baby, who used the Black Star Balls to wish Planet Tsufru into existence. Without enough time to gather them from the four galaxies that make up the universe again, our heroes turn to a strikingly familiar tactic.

Dragon Ball GT ep 39 - This is the End! Baby Eradicated At Last

The final, epic conclusion to the battle between Machine Mutants and the GTang takes place between Golden Oozaru Baby and Super Saiyan 4 Goku... and it's one of the worst animation jobs in the series. (Even by Uchiyama standards.)

Dragon Ball GT ep 29 - Ultra-Yikes?! Super Saiyan 3 is Beaten!!

It's Goku vs Baby Vegeta, as the whole world has been turned into Tsufruians through Baby's brain-eggs. And he doesn't intend to stop until the whole universe has been turned into the new Tsufruians with he, King Tsufurian's "Baby", at the top. And (seemingly randomly, considering) he has picked Son Goku to be the one Saiyan who dies by his hands to pay for the atrocities his people committed on Planet Plant all those years ago.

Review: Black Star Dragon Balls Saga (DBGT episodes 1 - 22)

Dragon Ball Z ended its weekly run on Fuji TV on January 31st 1996. Dragon Ball GT began its run on the same channel, in the same time slot, with largely the same staff, on February 7th 1996. There was no break between the last episode of Z and the first episode of GT. And unlike DB and Z's long weekly runs on TV, there was no original manga from which to adapt story. Dragon Ball's staff was doing something they'd never been asked to do before... Sure, they'd come up with filler content, but even some of that (probably more than we'll ever know officially) had input from the original author. GT was a different beast. Toriyama gave them some concept sketches and then he was done. Dragon Ball's future was now in the hands of its anime staff, and with only a week between Z's end and GT's premiere.

Dragon Ball GT ep 22 - The Scheme is Revealed!! The Evil Life Form Baby

Dr. Myuu laments as his greatest Machine Mutant, known as Baby, dies before his eyes.

Dragon Ball GT ep 21 - How Can This Be!! Goku Has Become a Metal Slab!

Dude, spoilers.

In order to save Trunks from Dr. Myuu's clutches, Goku battles Myuu's top commander, General Rild, whose body is the Planet M2 itself. He's got his work cut out for him.

Dragon Ball GT ep 20 - I'm Astounded!! A Metal Tsunami Attacks Goku

It's Super Saiyan Goku vs Hyper Mega Rild on the Planet M2!

Dragon Ball GT ep 19 - To Battle!! The Mighty Mutant - Rild

Goku gathers with Trunks and Pan at the SS Capsule Corp. to warn them of an impending arrival; A villain who, according to Goku, has a ki stronger than Majin Boo. (Not joking. Last episode Goku fought a Happy Meal Toy, and this week GT is playing the "stronger than the last major villain" card already.) That ki belongs to none other than the Commander of Planet M2...

Our episode begins with the SS Capsule Corp. in peril as it's chased through space by a fleet of enemy starships. Pan tries her best to outmaneuver and fire back at the horde of enemies, but it's simply too much for a ship that was never meant for combat to begin with.
